In 1980, the participants took an IQ test -- and 20 years later, all participants were asked whether they were currently vegetarians.

366 of the 8,170 participants said they were vegetarians, and the group included nine vegans (who eat no animal products, such as meat, dairy products, and eggs) and 123 people who called themselves vegetarians despite eating fish and chicken. Guess what? Those with higher IQ scores at age 10 were more likely to be vegetarians at age 30, with the difference in IQ points was about five points, according to the study.

Wednesday, July 19, 2006

無明
By Jeremy Cooke
BBC News, Washington

A Canadian man who set out to use the internet to trade a paper clip to
get a house says he has achieved his aim. Kyle MacDonald, who is 26,
made 16 trades over almost a year - and is now preparing to move into
his new home.

A novelty doorknob, a camping stove, a keg of beer and an afternoon
with rock star Alice Cooper were some of the stages in his swap
marathon.

Mr MacDonald has now ended up with a house in the small town of Kipling, Saskatchewan, which he has yet to see.

MacDonald has yet to visit his new house in Kipling

Marketing genius
The outcome is a testament to the power of the internet and to the
determination of Kyle MacDonald, who started this self-set challenge a
year ago with one red paper clip.

He always claimed to be confident that he could eventually trade up to a house of his own - and now step-by-step he has done it.

MacDonald started with just one paper clip

The paper clip was
traded for a pen in the shape of a fish. That was swapped for a novelty
door knob, then a camping stove, then a generator.

Next he got a keg of beer with a neon sign which Kyle's marketing genius dubbed an instant party kit.

That was traded for a snowmobile, which was traded in turn for a holiday in British Columbia.

The holiday was converted to a van which went for a recording contract,
which was traded for a year of rent-free living in a house in Phoenix,
Arizona.

Snow globe specialist
It may have all ended there but Kyle MacDonald was determined.

The rent-free deal was swapped for an afternoon with rock star Alice Cooper and that was bizarrely traded for a snow globe.

TV actor Corbin Bernsen, an avid collector of snow globes, decided he must have it and offered a paid role in his new movie.

The people of Kipling, Saskatchewan - a small town with a population of
only 1,140 - decided they'd like one of their community to get the role
and offered, yes, a house in their town.

Kyle MacDonald described the news as mind-blowing and is preparing to
move to Kipling, a place he has never even visited before.
Monday, July 03, 2006

¬P¥J¡A¦A¨£¡I

Friday, June 30, 2006

Hong Kong Happy Valley Cemetery, established in 1841

Ralph Lauren, long recognized as a leader in fashion, is now also a
leader in compassion after announcing a precedent-setting decision to
no longer use fur in any of his apparel or home collections, based
purely on ethical grounds.

The Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation had been considering eliminating fur
from its lines for some time and finally issued a statement making its
decision to go fur-free official after a series of meetings with PETA
during which executives viewed grisly undercover video footage of fur
farms in China, where more than half the finished fur garments imported
for sale in the United States are sourced. Shortly after meetings with
PETA in February and March 2006, the company committed to pulling all
fur from its shelves. “Fur has never been an integral part of our
design strategy …,” said a Polo Ralph Lauren spokesperson. “We are
publicly announcing this decision because the use of fur has been under
review internally and we feel that the time is right to take this
action.”

On fur farms in China, animals are confined to tiny wire cages through
all weather extremes. Before they are skinned, workers bludgeon them
with metal rods and slam them against the ground, breaking their bones
but not always killing them. Many animals are skinned while they are
still alive.

The Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation sent PETA a signed statement of
assurance acknowledging its intent to pull all advertising for fur,
cancel all pending orders for fur products, and beginning with its
holiday 2006 collections, no longer sell any fur products. Twelve
hundred of its brand-new fall 2006 fur-trimmed coats will be donated to
charities in developing nations.

Ralph Lauren’s compassionate, progressive decision sends a powerful
message to the clothing industry that torturing and killing rabbits,
raccoons, foxes, and other animals for fashion won’t be tolerated.

If you know someone who still wears fur, urge him or her to watch this
video. Also, please write to Ralph Lauren and thank him for this
decision:
